WIE- Programs

WIE Days
Are you interested in learning more about career opportunities in engineering? If so, come see what the nationally ranked University of Illinois College of Engineering has to offer. During your visit, you can sit in on a class, visit the women’s engineering dorm, tour the campus, have lunch with engineering students, and more!

Freshmen Engineering Program
Incoming freshmen women in the College of Engineering are invited to attend a two-day workshop at the beginning of the fall semester. The program includes sessions on adjusting to college life, study strategies, and the engineering profession while providing opportunities for new students to meet their classmates.

G.A.M.E.S. (Girls' Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Summer Camp)
Girls' Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering & Science is an annual week long camp, designed to give academically talented middle school aged girls an opportunity to explore exciting engineering and scientific fields through demonstrations, classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and contacts with women in these technical fields.

Undergraduate Research Program hosted by WIE and MEP
The Undergraduate Research program was founded to provide research opportunities to women and minority undergraduate students (African American, Latino/a, Native American). Undergraduate Research Scholars spend a semester or more working in a lab with a graduate mentor and a member of the faculty. One of the biggest sponsors of this program is the Intel Corporation.

Intel Scholars Undergraduate Research Program (ISUR)
The Intel Corporation is biggest sponsor of our undergraduate research program. To be an Intel Scholar you must be in Electrical and Computer Engineering [ECE], Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering [ChBE], Materials Science and Engineering [MatSE], or Computer Science [CS]. Intel Scholars may be asked to limit their research to certain areas. For the 2006/07 school year, Intel has asked that all research be based in Informational Technology or the Superconductor field.

WIE Business Connection Series
WIE offers a number of educational and informational presentations for students, staff, and faculty members, as well as also for the community throughout the academic year.

Funding for Student Societies and Community Groups
Is your campus student society or Champaign-Urbana community group doing an activity that would support and encourage girls or women to thrive in engineering? WIE can provide financial support (usually less than $500) for these activities. Groups requesting support need to write a brief letter to WIE describing the event or activity, the objectives, planned date and time, and budget, and plans for publicity.

WIE Scholarship Program
Each year, WIE awards numerous merit and need-based scholarships made possible through generous donations from corporate sponsors and private donors. Students need not apply for these scholarships. Incoming students will be chosen based on their applications and current students will be selected using the information provided through Engineering Career Services' EASE System.

Other WIE Programs

  • WIE subscribes to MentorNet, a national network of electronic mentoring for women students of science and engineering. UIUC women students can sign up for MentorNet without cost and be matched with a mentor in the workforce.
  • WIE maintains a Listserv, a electronic newsletter full of campus and career resources for all women students in the College of Engineering.
  • WIE participates in student advising through the College of Engineering Academic Programs Office.
  • WIE analyzes College of Engineering data (and collects their own) to assess the quality of the undergraduate student experience for women.
