The 2008 G.A.M.E.S. Camp have the following positions available for our summer camp for young women. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

NOTE:
Because of the large number of women who have applied for positions in previous years, only the first qualified applicants will be scheduled for interviews. First round of interviews will take place at the end of February or early March. Applications will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled. Other applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application.


Camp Project and Teaching Coordinators
Camp Project Coordinators will plan, prepare, present, and supervise middle school (6th through 9th grade) campers on a week-long engineering project. These coordinators will develop the curriculum and project of the camp they oversee (within pre-established guidelines). Coordinators should possess strong communication skills. They will lead daily classroom instruction or assist teachers in class instruction and hands-on project-based activities where campers are encouraged to implement concepts from the lessons learned in the classroom sessions. Coordinators will be responsible for developing the camper’s project manuals and project curriculum. Additionally, they will coordinate camp academic activities, concepts, and themes with camp teachers and GAMES staff and will be in charge of scheduling and overseeing the entire camp academic calendar (to include lab visits, project activities, and additional learning events) for the week of camp. Experience with youth is preferred.

Requirements:

  • Energy and enthusiasm for the field of Physics and Structural Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, or Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering,
  • Knowledgeable and approachable style.
  • Strong organizational skills and sense of responsibility.
  • Ability to work independently; work effectively within a group and ability to take a project from an idea to a reality without direct oversight.
  • Ability to work well within tight deadlines with creativity and reliable follow-through.
  • Belief in girls' abilities and interests in mathematics, science, and technology.
  • Positive, upbeat disposition.
  • Must be comfortable and engaging while teaching to a roomful of youth and have interest in being an effective, empathetic teacher.
  • Must be able and willing to explain basic concepts well, and to assist young learners in building an enthusiasm for the curriculum.

Time Commitment:

  • About 180 hours distributed from early spring to the end of Camp week.
  • Coordinators must be able to set and maintain a consistent weekly work schedule to allow for collaboration with other camp staff.

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage (based upon experience) for all pre and post camp work.
  • Stipend for work completed during the week of camp.

Lab Assistant
The general duties of a lab assistant will be to assist the Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering Camp Coordinators and Faculty during lab times, with curriculum and implementation of lesson plans.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student in engineering, mathematics, science, or education discipline.
  • Knowledgeable and approachable style.
  • Belief in girls' abilities and interests in mathematics, science, and technology.
  • Positive, upbeat disposition.
  • Must be comfortable and engaging while teaching to a roomful of youth and have interest in being an effective, empathetic teacher.
  • Must be able and willing to explain basic concepts well, and to assist young learners in building an enthusiasm for the curriculum.
  • Background and ability to serve as technical adviser to the campers in math, engineering and science, as they plan and execute a camp project.
  • Need to have taken BIOE 202 Or MCB 493 JLM.

Time Commitment:

  • Daytime availability Monday through Friday during the week of camp.
  • Open availability Saturday, August 2, 2008 through Sunday, August 9, 2008 preferred.

  • Hourly Wage

Counselors
The general duties of a counselor will be to lead a group of about 10 girls through scheduled activities as well as assist in supervision of the girls during recreational and social activities. The camps are residential camps, and counselors will be required to reside on campus with the campers. All counselors will be on duty throughout the day hours, except for periods of free time as pre-scheduled by WIE. In the evenings, counselors’ duties will be rotated such that at least three counselors are on duty at all times during the night hours.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student in engineering, mathematics, science, or education discipline.
  • Professional, enthusiastic, responsible, and positive attitude.
  • Being able to work effectively and simultaneously as an individual leader within a supportive team environment.
  • Availability for pre-camp planning communications (reliable and timely communications via e-mail is highly preferred).
  • Background and ability to serve as technical adviser to the campers in math, engineering and science, as they plan and execute a camp project.
  • Head counselors should demonstrate previous experience and comfort overseeing others (particularly their peers), organizational skills, and energy.
  • Passing a university security screening procedure.

Time Commitment:

  • Residing at camp continuously from Saturday, August 2, 2008 until about 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 9, 2008.
  • Head Counselors will also need to be available before camp at the end of July to assist in coordinating the counselor handbook and schedules.

Compensation:

  • Stipend for work completed during the week of camp.
  • Head Counselors will receive a hourly wage (based upon experience) for all pre and post camp work.
