Rose Award for Teaching Excellence

The Rose Award for Teaching Excellence is intended to foster and reward excellence in undergraduate teaching in the College of Engineering. It recognizes teachers who excel at motivating undergraduate students to learn and appreciate engineering. Nominations may be submitted for excellence in instruction or excellence in course design and development (including the creation of new courses or significant revisions of existing courses). The winners receive a monetary award and a plaque.

Solicitation
October
Associate dean for academic programs sends memo to department heads, enclosing explanation of award and list of recipients.

Due
November 30 - to departmental main office. The nomination packet should include a letter of nomination from the department head, a statement describing the teaching or motivational method used, and appropriate supporting documents, such as class notes, syllabus, examples of student work, or whatever might help convey the nature of the teaching innovation. Professors and instructors (not TAs) may be nominated. Each department is limited to one nomination.

January 15 -six (6) copies to the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, 206 Engineering Hall, MC-272.

Selection
January
Two recipients are chosen by the Teaching Evaluation and Improvement Subcommittee of the Executive Committee, plus undergraduate students.

Publication
Date
Recipients are informed by letter from dean, drafted by associate dean for academic programs, with copies to the following:

  • department head
  • nominator
  • editor in the Engineering Communications Office for convocation booklet publication
  • associate dean for academic programs for convocation program
  • associate deans for external and administrative affairs
  • chairman, awards committee

Logistics
February/March
The editor in the Engineering Communications Office prepares the college awards convocation booklet, which will carry photo and biosketch of awardee. Recipients are presented their awards at the convocation and invited by associate dean for undergraduate affairs to awards luncheon.
