This award, supported by a $100,000 endowment made in 1978 from the Ford Motor Company Fund, is made during the second year of study to two outstanding engineering graduate students. The award is in addition to an assistantship or other support. Based on performance during the first year of study, the recipients are judged not only on grade-point average but on other evidence of accomplishment, such as initiating research or contributing directly to practice. When more than two nominees meets all criteria, preference is given to those whose fields will contribute most to areas related to the automotive industry.
