W. Leighton Collins was a faculty member in the College of Engineering from 1929-65 and former executive director of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He was a pioneer and leader in ASEE and helped shape engineering instruction in the United States. This award recognizes outstanding development or use of new and innovative teaching methods. The winner receives a check and a plaque.

Associate dean for academic programs sends memo to department heads, enclosing explanation of award and list of recipients. The nomination packet should include a standard cover page, a letter of nomination from the department head, a statement from the instructor describing the teaching innovation, and appropriate supporting documents, such as class notes, syllabus, examples of student work, or whatever might help convey the nature of the teaching innovation. Innovations with success within the past three years will be given priority over older efforts. Off-campus and distance learning efforts are also eligible.
