Are you one of the best students in engineering? It's time to prove it! The Knight of St. Patrick award is given annually to 8-15 of the best juniors and seniors in engineering. The award dates back to 1903 at the University of Missouri and was first given to students at the University of Illinois in 1950. The Knights of St. Patrick are recognized as the best students in engineering. Selection is based on leadership, excellence in character, and exceptional contribution to the College of Engineering and its students. The Knights are honored at the annual Knights of St. Patrick Ball in March, and an engraved plaque of each Knights class is permanently hung in the main hallway of Engineering Hall.
Ask your dean, department head, or student society for a nomination form--they each have 2. Nominations open on October 1 and are due on October 17. If you are nominated, you will be required to complete the Knights application (which is included in the nomination packet). These are due by November 7.
From these applications, the field will be narrowed for interviews in January, from which the 2009 Knights' class will be selected. If you have any questions, email the 2008-2009 Knights Director, David Rockwood, drockwo2@uiuc.edu. http://ksp.ec.uiuc.edu
Pitch your product idea for the chance to compete for $10,000. Idea To Product (I2P) is a unique academic competition looking at ideas at their earliest stage. I2P is not a business plan competition. I2P only requires a one-page submission, done according to a strict format, outlining an idea for a product (or service) and its market.
The Technology Entrepreneur Center is hosting the University of Illinois I2P competition this year. Competing students should submit an online entry. Up to 10 student ideas will be selected for the Illinois campus round of I2P on October 23, 2008. Entries open on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Online entries for the Illinois campus round of I2P has been EXTENDED TO END OF DAY, SUNDAY Oct. 19, 2008. http://www.tec.uiuc.edu

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products, and services. The corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
No ‘Experience’? Not True!” So many students, when asked what work experience they have, answer with a shrug, 'I don't really have any.' But by looking at it differently, it turns out that they usually have a lot more than they ever realized--or gave themselves credit for. Come learn the three easy steps to extracting your competencies from the context, translating that into an attention-getting résumé, and crafting a perfect verbal message to 'wow' your interviewer. Free Papa Del's pizza; presented by Lockheed Martin.
Sam Mele will be on campus to talk with students at an informal (free) lunch, and to meet with students in office hours appointments in the afternoon. He will also give a lecture at 5:00 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to get advice from a very successful entrepreneur. Mele has over 15 years of sales and management experience in enterprise software. Read more about him at http:www.firm58.com. Attend IdeaBox to learn about the campus resources that can help you meet with other students...devise a solution...build a venture...compete for prize money. Laura Hollis (Clinical Professor of Business Administration, College of Business; Adjunct Lecturer, College of Engineering) will challenge students: to think differently about the development of solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, to consider building a sustainable venture around those solutions, and will make students aware of the resources available through the Technology Entrepreneur Center and the College of Engineering (and elsewhere) to help them build, fund, and grow those ventures--particularly participating in our competitions, which are fun, and have prizes of up to $30,000! http://tec.uiuc.edu
Engineering Open House is the largest student run event on campus featuring 150 exhibits, three design contests, and attracts over 25,000 visitors. Past exhibits have included custom games using WiiMotes, student built rocket launches across the Bardeen Quad, water filtration systems designed for third-world countries, and an optical version of an ultrasound that could be used to detect cancer. You could create one of this year's exciting exhibits.
Have a great idea for an exhibit? Just want to learn more about the process? Come to one of our exhibitors information sessions (EIS)! Individual and personal projects are welcome. At the EIS, we will be going over the exhibits process and introducing a few members of the central committee who will be working with exhibitors throughout the year. All society representatives are encouraged to come (even if you did it last year). Questions? Contact Gavin Rehkemper, eoh-exhibits@ec.uiuc.edu or visit http://eoh.ec.uiuc.edu
The Technology Entrepreur Center will host a CNVC Kickoff event that will include an overview of the Competition, a Speed-Teaming event.

Don Norman, an internationally- renowned expert on human-centered design, is the Breed Professor of Design at Northwestern University, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, and former vice president of Apple Computer will talk about Sociable Design. Sociable design extends the arena of design from function, aesthetics, and emotion to the world of social interaction. Much of our activities involve other people, even things we believe we are doing in isolation. In this sense, all tasks are social, for no task is done in isolation of the needs of others. Sociable design requires system thinking, changing our unsociable products that work well in isolation but horribly in the world of other objects, tasks, and events into ones that work well together, sociably. Forget affordances: it is the signifiers that matter.
Norman is the author of 'The Design of Everyday Things,' 'Emotional Design,' and 'The Design of Future Things.' Additional sponsorship for this event: Illinois Informatics Initiative, Computer Science and College of Engineering
Designmatters2 is a free lecture series intended to promote design thinking that integrates design, business and technology in the creation of innovative products, services and experiences. Questions? Contact: Elka Kazmierczak, kazmier1@illinois.edu. http://designmatters.art.uiuc.edu
Filmed in the Solomon Islands, Mexico, India, and the U.S., this film chronicles a missionary organization’s development of ultra-low-tech audio technologies (like a cardboard record player) to evangelize to traditional communities with limited access to electricity and media. Interspersing interviews with shots of nodal patterns, waveforms and a signal generator, the film “has presented disembodied audio as a religion unto itself” (The New York Times). The Tailenders [2005] is 72 minutes with discussion to follow. http://www.illigal.uiuc.edu/web/etsi/etc-now
