KENYA PROGRAM: Six-Week Program, Beginning Late May MOI UNIVERSITY MOI University was established in 1984 and enrolls approximately 6,000 students each year. Gracious modern buildings and lush greenery comprise the campus which coexists in a harmonious pedestrian-oriented, human-scaled environment. The university is in Eldoret, which is located in the deep heart of the Great Rift Valley, just a stone's throw from many fascinating tourist sites. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Students will participate in a variety of lectures regarding different aspects of Kenya and Africa including geographical and ecological issues in Kenya, the history of Kenya and its language (Kiswahili), ethnography of African societies, state of science & technology in Kenya, African economic programs, etc. Students may take a one hour a day Swahili course and have individual projects assigned to them. (Projects to be determined.) The academic content of the program will be reinforced by some afternoon activities and visits to historical sites, industries and excursions to famous national parks of Kenya. Trips to Nairobi, Mombosa and Masa Mari game parks are planned. Students will have the opportunity to see first-hand the relationship between engineering, technology and society in a developing nation and will be able to interact with Kenyan students. ACCOMMODATIONS Students will live in the university guest house located within the campus. ELIGIBILITY Student who wish to participate in the Kenya program must show a strong commitment to academic achievement. No previous language is necessary to apply. Students must be in good standing with the College of Engineering to apply. In order for seniors to participate, they must fulfill a campus/college general education requirement or the international minor while abroad. ESTIMATED EXPENSES Apply during Program of the Week and receive $100 off your program fee.
No money is due until February, 2004. At that time, upon acceptance to this program, students will be required to pay the non-refundable processing fee of $225 and a program fee deposit of $250. The remainder of the program fee will be billed through student accounts for the term in which the student is enrolled. * Depending on the student's circumstances, he/she may need to plan for the following expenses: passport, visa, vaccination shots, local transportation, additional travel, incidentals, etc. ** Students from other UIUC colleges will be charged the higher/actual program amount. The College of Engineering IPENG office is supplementing the program cost for engineering students. *** IPENG arranges group travel. All students are required to participate in these arrangements. CREDIT Six hours of credit will be earned. The credits earned abroad can be transferred to UIUC and used to satisfy curricular requirements. The credit can be used to satisfy International Minor and humanities requirements for the campus/college. The credit can also be used in fulfilling the non-western culture requirement. SUMMER ORIENTATION Students accepted to a College of Engineering sponsored program will be required to attend a Saturday orientation that will cover completing required paperwork, health and travel issues. This is a mandatory event and will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2005. Applications are due by December 17, 2004. Space is limited and participants are chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Apply during the Program of the Week and receive $100 off your program fee. The College of Engineering offers an International Minor, in which courses in the language, history, economics and politics of a country or region are combined with regular engineering studies. Students wishing to obtain an International Minor must complete 21 hours of a combination of language and social science and humanities courses, and must spend at least six weeks in residence in the chosen area of concentration. INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING FELLOWSHIPFellowships are awarded to qualified engineering students. These fellowships cover all or most of the airfare. Interested students should inquire at the International Programs in Engineering Office located in 210 Engineering Hall. NON-ENGINEERING UIUC STUDENTS This program is designed for students seeking to gain speaking fluency in the Spanish language in a short period of time. It is designed for students in professional programs which do not allow extensive language studies to seek their fluency goals. Students in Agriculture, Fine and Applied Arts and Commerce and Business Administration who seek this type of fluency goal are invited to participate in this program. Scholarships do not apply. NON-UIUC STUDENTS This program is open to non-UIUC students. Students participating in these programs will be required to do the following:
