International Graduate Research Fellowships
The International Graduate Research Fellowship is for graduate students in engineering. The purpose of the fellowship is to encourage graduate students to conduct part of their research at a foreign institution, thereby experiencing a new culture.
The fellowship provides round trip airfare,
plus reimbursement of $125 per week for up
to three months for other expenses connected with the research
abroad. You must spend at least one month doing research
at a single location. You may attend lectures, seminars,
or conferences during your time in residence, but these activities
should not be the primary purpose of your travel.
Eligibility:
- must have completed at least 2 semesters
as a degree-seeking graduate student
- must be in engineering; Chemical Engineering
and Agricultural Engineering are included
- must subsequently return to UIUC for at least
1 semester
- must submit a detailed report
upon return
Research:
- should consist of experiments, specimen or equipment preparation, computation, analysis or other kinds of research that involve interaction with your foreign counterparts in a research context
- projects that are mostly non-interactive will not qualify; for example, library study, courses and thesis writing
Proposal:
A proposal, not to exceed 3 pages, must accompany your application (see below) and should include:
- the research objective(s) to be accomplished at the foreign institution,
- a description of methods that you will use,
- justification for conducting the research at the selected location, and
- expected results or outcomes of your work
Coordinate plans with both your local advisor and the foreign advisor to insure that the experience will be meaningful and will enhance your research.
