International Engineering Schorlarship

Engineering students (College of Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Agricultural Engineering students) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are strongly encouraged to gain international awareness and experiences.  Many students see their study abroad experience as a pivotal, formative event in their education.  The purpose of this scholarship program is to encourage students to begin planning early and to provide financial incentives to study abroad.

The Award
Each winner will receive:

  • $500 at the start of each of your first two semesters at Illinois

  • $3,000 for each semester (minimum of one, maximum of two) that you study abroad; therefore you may receive $3,000 or $6,000 when you study abroad

  • Roundtrip airfare to your study abroad destination

Save Money by Studying Abroad
Note that when you study abroad, you also pay a lower tuition; tuition is currently about $515/semester when you study abroad instead of the on-campus rate of about $3,100 for residents and $7,600 for nonresidents.  So, the total value of the scholarship may be up to $13,000 for residents and $22,000 for nonresidents if you study abroad for 2 semesters.  So, you can actually save money by studying abroad.  Students who have studied abroad confirm that the academic, personal, and life experiences are even more valuable than the financial incentives.

Study Abroad Opportunities
Students may study abroad anytime after completion of the freshman year.  We have arrangements with institutions around the world.  If we do not have an institutional agreement where you want to go, we will explore other ways to get you there.  Our goal is to provide extensive study abroad opportunities, so you will gain meaningful experiences and global awareness.

Selection Criteria
We expect to award scores of scholarships, hopefully to every qualified applicant.  However, if the number of completed applications exceeds the number of scholarships available, we will award scholarships based upon the date of receipt of completed application.  No applications for the fall semester will be considered after April 1st of that year.
