On an average school day, I would normally wake up, follow my morning routine, and be ready to leave about 9:15 am to walk to catch the tram.  It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the tram depending on how hot it is and how fast you're walking.  From there we caught a tram, running every 5 minutes during rush hour, that would take us to Jean Jaurès, the closest tram stop to the school.  From there it would be another 5 minute walk to the school.  Classes always lasted two hours, and then we would make our way to the cafeteria.  The cafeteria, known as Restaurant Universitaire or Resto U for short, was not located in the school but it was only a short walk away, about 2 minutes.  A meal at the Resto U costs 2.65€, which is extremely cheap in comparison to anything else available for lunch.  Meals consisted of an entrée (known as an appetizer to us), a piece of fruit, a dairy product (cheese, yogurt, or pudding), and piece of bread, and a main dish (consisting normally of vegetables and a meat item).  Water was always the drink of choice, since it was the only beverage offered there.  After lunch, our group would normally head back to the school to use the internet in the school computer lab, since almost no businesses are open during the lunch hour.  Then at 2 pm, we would have another two hours of classes and be done for the day around 4 pm.  It was during this time that we would normally run errands, since most businesses close early at night.  The Monoprix and Match (similar to our supermarkets) closed around 8 pm and the train station ticket counters closed at 9 pm.  We usually ate dinner at the Resto U or some other cheap, and sometimes better, fast service restaurant.  The tram, our major method of transportation, stops running around midnight, and the buses stop running even earlier (about 10 or 11 pm depending on the line).  It's helpful to have some tram schedules with you, so you don't get stuck downtown and have to walk back to the dorms like we occasionally did.  Taxis are always available at the train station and cost about 10€ at night and more during rush hour.

The Tram

A monthly pass useable on trams and buses, known as the Maxi Pass U, costs 27€

Train Station

All trains, regional and international, depart from Nancy's only train station, located in the middle of downtown

Resto U Food

A salad course, yogurt, banana, and a main dish of pasta and sauce

Resto U Food

The chefs are good about combining meats/fish with new sauces and vegetables so you're almost guaranteed never to eat the same meal twice
