Program Information

Description

German 103 in Vienna is an intensive, introductory foreign language class taught at Wirtschaftsuniversität-Wien, in Vienna. The course is taught every summer, usually by Professor Claudia Bornholdt. Due to the immersive nature of the experience, this program is only recommended to students who did exceptionally well in German 102.

Some Pictures

Although we usually went out looking for food separately, as a class we most often went to a place called "The Centimeter." There were quite a few things on the menu measured in linear units.

One of our first class outings was to the Volksoper. We saw an opera about a wedding, I think. It's especially hard to stay awake when the opera is sung in your second language.

Here's a shot from the class room. We spent a ridiculous number of hours sitting in those seats...

We did a lot of sightseeing on foot as a class. It was pretty demeaning for a group of college students to have to be herded around a big city like a bunch of day-care kids. At least we have a better idea of how those massive groups of Asian tourists feel when seeing our cities.

This is where we lived. It looked pretty nice at night. The building was actually very dirty. The lobby was really nasty in there. The floor was always sticky, and everywhere reeked of cigarette smoke. It looks a lot more pleasant in this picture.

Burg Kreuzenstein is one of the places I visited. The class never got around to hiking up there, but me and a classmate considered it worthwile.

The Straßenbahn was one of our main modes of transportation in Vienna. We took one similar (much older, actually) every day from our dorms to class.

At least there was some familiar food.

Program Budget

These amounts are all presumed to be in US dollars. Keep in mind that rampant educational budget cuts, inflation, and overall devaluation of American currency will make these prices much higher next time around.
