LAS:199 Global Studies Course Abroad
Diversity and Integration in Cosmopolitan Vienna
Taught by Professor Bruce Murray

Housing Arrangements:

For our trip we stayed in the Westend City Hostel. It was fairly nice with typical bunk beds, bathroom in room, and locked compartments for personal storage. For more information about the hostel feel free to view their webpage. The staff spoke English and was very friendly. Don't expect much for the breakfast other than rolls and tee/coffee. If you have specific questions you can email the hostel and they will respond promptly.

Getting Around Town:

Vienna has an excellent public transportation system with Subways (U-bahn), street cars, and busses. You are provided by the professor with weekly passes to use these methods of transportation. The ticket you have only needs to be shown if an undercover agent asks you to present it (which did not happen to any of the students on our trip and we did not see this happen to anyone at all): other than that, you just get on without a hassle. The street cars run everywhere but I found that the subways were just so easy to use that I rarely took the time to find out where the street cars went. You will however want to use a street car if you are out late as the subways stop running around midnight. Don't worry, I managed to get back several times around 3 in the morning.

My two Cents (in Euros):

The trip was well worth the money. I had a great time abroad and would go to Austria again. There was just the right amount of planned activities to orient you with your surroundings and plenty of time to go around on your own. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in getting your feet wet to see if you want to study abroad in the future and yo anyone just interested in a quick trip over the winter break.
