Where I lived whilst there
I lived at
John XXIII College (nicknamed Johns) while I was attending school at ANU. Here are some pictures of the outside of it:
It was a really great place to live. The people I met there were people I hope to remain friends with for a very long time. Johns kids know how to make college fun and make you feel welcome.
It was a dormitory, here's what my room looked like:
Haha, ok, that was a joke. That is actually a prison cell that I saw when visiting a jail in Perth. Here was my actual dorm room. It came with a bed, closet, lamp, phone, sink, mirror, and heater. Best of all, you don't have a roommate!:
They had a front office that took care of almost anything you needed, from setting up your phone to giving you directions:
They had a cafeteria which was buffet style, very similar to the ones at UIUC. Although, this really makes you appreciate the variety UIUC dorms have. You really only had two choices for lunch and dinner each day at Johns, so don't complain about dorm food anymore at UIUC!!
There was also a really great computer lab with PCs and Macs in which you could write papers or use the internet to check e-mail. I didn't bring a computer with me to Australia, so this resource proved invaluable:
There was a place called the Junior Common Room (JCR for short) where anyone in Johns could watch tv or play ping pong. The TV was huge and got satellite, so I was able to watch ESPN while in Australia. It was really great that Johns had a place like this for the students. It showed that the university took notice of what students wanted.
Finally, they had a bar in the dorm. It got a little rowdy at times, but it was still nice that you could go and hang out there. Here's a picture of the Tav during the day when it wasn't open:
