Last, but not least, some of you may be wondering how much it cost me to go abroad and study at ANU. Here's an
APPROXIMATE breakdown of how much I spent and what it was spent on.
PLEASE NOTE: All amounts are in AUSTRALIAN dollars. At the time I went, the conversion rate was $0.65 American to $1 Australian. Therefore, all the prices listed below are actually less in American dollars. I will add a line under the TOTAL to show the amount of American money I spent.
| Housing: |
$3,600 |
| Tuition: |
$4,300 |
| Air fare: |
$1,500 |
| General expenses (buying necessities, going out, etc.): |
$300 |
| Books: |
$200 |
| Travelling |
$2,500 |
| TOTAL (in Australian Dollars): |
$12,400 |
| Total American Spent (at 0.65 exchange rate): |
$8,060 |
A few things to note: Tuition was paid in American dollars to UIUC. The tuition at the time at UIUC was $2,800. Also, since I got a fellowship from IPENG, they paid about $1,000 of my air fare. Again, this was a really great deal, I encourage all of you to participate in it. My travelling expenses may or may not be normal for people. I took about 6 flights within Australia alone, and plane tickets are expensive.
All in all, it wasn't too bad moneywise. If you think of how much you spend at U of I, it's about $3,500 for housing for a semester, $2,800 for tuition, plus $1,000 or so for general expenses and books. So that's about $7,300. Therefore, you only need to spend a little bit more to have a semester abroad. I am very glad I went, and I encourage all of you to do the same.
