POSTECH (Pohang university of Science and Technology) is one of the best engineering universities in Korea. There are 1300 undergraduates and 1700 graduates. The number of students is smaller in scale compared to other universities, but POSTECH is well-known for the quality of education in Korea.
Pohang University of Science and Technology, POSTECH, opened in 1986 as a research university with about 2,500 students and 200 faculty members. As Korea's industrialization and modernization unfolded, Korea needed increased self-reliance in science and technology to launch itself into the high technology era. Pohang Iron and Steel Company, Ltd., POSCO, one of the largest steel producers in the world at that time, recognized this national need, and in 1986 committed itself to building a world-class research university of science and engineering in the city of Pohang.
POSTECH selects students within the top 1 % of Korea. POSTECH has also been recognized as the top university within Asia by Asiaweek(1998)a and in 2003 the JoongAng Ilbo, one of Korea's most circulated daily newspapers, ranked POSTECH as the "#1 Science and Technology University in Korea". The low undergraduate student to professor ratio should be mentioned. More than 200 full-time professors with degrees make the ratio of 6:1. You will find more research chances at POSTECH as well. Professors and researchers at POSTECH are encouraged by the generous financial support from the Korean government. POSTECH is also a nationally recognized institution for innovative science and engineering research with state-of-the-art facilities such as the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea's first and only synchrotron radiation facility. POSTECH is able to offer a broad range of research opportunities to its students as they gain an invaluable experience working alongside faculty in world-class laboratories.
