Study India Program
The SIP ( Study India program) program is a unique program in India. It gives an opportunity for students living in the West to get a taste of a South East Asian Culture. It helps students to broaden their perspective on various cultures.
The program in summer 2003 was for 7 weeks beginning on 14th June and ending on 5th August. The University campus is enormous with a wide variety of flora and fauna.
There is a wide variety of courses that the university has to offer. It is quite easy to find faculty willing to provide an independent study on most topics. The local students have vacations during the summer due to which most courses are either independent studies or one on one with a faculty member. Internships may be possible if set up before the program. The University also provides free Yoga classes in the morning and afternoons. For students interested in learning to play the tabla, private lessons are available for a nominal cost.
A more complete list of available courses is available at the University of Hyderabad SIP homepage .
Most classes are in the Social Science building or the the Folks Culture building in which the SIP office is located . There are also some classes in the science complex.
There is housing available for Study India Program students in a special guest house called the SIP guest house . It has single rooms and double occupancy rooms with A/C. There is a kitchen and dining hall in the building itself where breakfast lunch and dinner are served. The Guest house also has a computer room with 4 computers of which 2 are connected to internet. There is also free printing available here. There is also a TV room which has a collection of English and Hindi movies and also some documentaries. There were about 20 students in the guest house during the 2004 program.
There is a health center on campus that is equipped to give basic health care. Most minor medical problems can be treated here.
There is a large library with a very good collection of Academic books. Internet access is available here too.
Local Phone calls can be made for free with phone in the guest house. However for international calls, there are telephone booths called STD/ISD booths. There is one right in front of the guest house.
There are buses that run from the main gate of the university to the city every 10 minutes. There are also a number of reliable cab companies that can be used. Once in the city the best mode of transport is autorikshaws.
