New Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs Named
Charles L. Tucker III, the Alexander Rankin Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, has been named Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs for the College of Engineering, pending the approval of the university's board of trustees.

Professor Tucker earned his SB, SM, and PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the faculty in 1978, and since 2003, he has also served as Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs with the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. He has earned numerous departmental teaching awards as well as the the Accenture Award for Excellence in Advising and the Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence from the College of Engineering. He has been included on the Engineering Council Advisor List for Outstanding Advising, and he is also a Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

New MEP Director Named
Ivan Favila, has been named Assistant Dean and Director of the Morrill Engineering Program within the College of Engineering. An Illinois alumnus (BS 1994, GE), Favila previously served as Director of the Minority Engineering Program at Notre Dame, as the assistant director of the Minority Engineering Recruitment and Retention Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and director of the Cooperative Engineering Education Program.

Formalized in 1973, the goal of the MEP (then called the Minority Engineering Program) was to increase the retention of students from underrepresented groups in engineering. Through MEP, several generations of students have academic support services and activities, financial assistance, scholarships, work experience, and community.

Hirschi named Assistant Dean
Professor Michael C. Hirschi has been named as an assistant dean in the Office of Undergraduate Programs. In addition to being part of the student advising team, Dean Hirschi will also manage scholarships and associated gift funds. A professor in the Department of Agricultural and and Biological Engineering, Hirschi earned his BAgE and MSAgE in agricultural engineering from the University of Minnesota, and his PhD in agricultural engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Engineers Night

After the mass chaos of Quad Day, a lot of students (and especially freshmen) are still trying to figure out which clubs they'd like to join. We host Engineers Night annually in the fall semester exclusively for engineering societies--providing food, games, and prizes as students speak with representatives offering the best of their organizations. E-Night is an excellent way to meet fellow engineers, get involved, and kick-off the year.

Gerdau Ameristeel Info Session

Gerdau Ameristeel is the fourth largest overall steel company and the second largest minimill steel producer in North America. Refreshments and giveaways will be provided. Life In Industry Presentation from Dow Corning

Hosted by SWE, “Time to Face the 'Real World' – Life in Industry” is about the differences between life at school versus life in the corporate world. Examples of how time management needs to change, how integrating with your friends may change (usually for the better), and how other aspects of life are different. We'll also provide some examples of what technical professionals do at Dow Corning to give some perspective on what to expect when pursuing an industrial career. Pizza and pop will also be provided.

Consulting Career Forum

Steven Gilbert serves as senior vice president of Human Resources and Administration for Fluor Corporation, where he is responsible for the company's human resources, executive services, real estate and office services functions. Silicon Valley Workshop Opportunity
Applications due Sept. 12. 2 weeks in Silicon Valley at the Plug and Play Tech Center
The Technology Entrepreneur Center and the College of Engineering would like to send up to 25 students to Silicon Valley during the winter break for a two-week technology entrepreneurship workshop at the Plug and Play Tech Center. The workshop is slated for January 5-16, 2009.

The workshop sessions at the Plug and Play Tech Center will focus on innovation, technology entrepreneurship and leadership, and will feature Plug and Play’s corporate partners, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs within the incubator. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with other successful high-tech companies in the Silicon Valley area during their stay, and will have several opportunities to network with prominent entrepreneurial Illinois alumni.

The program aspires to expose students to many facets of technology entrepreneurship, with firms in various stages of a startup lifecycle, and to continue to build an entrepreneurial community at Illinois. Open to undergraduate and graduate students. For full consideration, application materials must be received by 5:00 p.m. on September 12, 2008.

Students selected for the workshop opportunity will have several ways to pay for the trip and workshop, including:
1. Win one of (up to) eight paid scholarships. Scholarships cover all transportation, lodging and meal costs.
2. Complete an internship: this will be completed with a local company and selected students must interview for positions. 170 hours must be completed with the company before December 10, 2008. Work schedule is to be determined by student and sponsoring company.
3. Raise sponsorship from a local, national or global company; a campus unit; or other funding body.
4. $2,500 paid to the University of Illinois through the Technology Entrepreneur Center. Selected students wishing to book their own travel and lodging may do so, and can then pay a pro-rated rate for the workshop. Live EDGE 2008--International $100,000 USD Challenge in support of Green Design

Premier Farnell plc, the leading multi-channel, high service distributor and its companies (Newark, Farnell, Premier Electronics, CPC, Farnell-Newark and MCM) today launched its international competition Live Edge--Electronic Design for the Global Environment, now in its second year. The competition is designed to provide a forum where electronic design engineers and students can design products that are environmentally friendly through the use of electronic components.

Entries can be submitted between October 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009; winners will be announced on the April 2, 2009. The competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over. Electronics engineers, students and inventors around the world are invited to submit designs for an innovative product that utilises electronic components and has a positive impact on the environment, for example by increasing energy efficiency or reducing carbon emissions. Matter, Energy and the Universe

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), funded in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation, is part of a national network at universities around the country. Members over the age of 50 enjoy courses, study groups and lectures. It is learning for the joy of it, among friends--without tests or grades. OLLI at Illinois offered its first courses in fall 2007, and now has 300 members. World renowned for their contributions to understanding matter and energy in many forms, and at all scales, eight physics department faculty members will teach an OLLI course in fall 2008.
