Selected Rankings of the College of Engineering

 

·         ASEE (2000) ranked the U of I College of Engineering third in the nation for research expenditures.  Expenditures from federal, state, institutional, and private gifts, grants, and contracts were nearly $139 million in 2001.

 

·         Fiske Guide to Colleges (2003) named the U of I one of 43 "best buys" among public and private colleges and universities based on the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.

 

·         Illinois is among the nation's top 20 universities that grant doctoral degrees, according to an Associated Press compilation of 1995 rankings by the National Research Council.

 

·         The Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog (2002) recognized the U of I as a top school in three areas: best value for the tuition dollar, support for diversity, and academic challenge.   

 

·         Kiplinger's Personal Finance (October 2001) ranked the U of I ninth among top public colleges and universities.

 

·         Money magazine (1998) ranked the U of I eighteenth of the top 100 schools providing the best education for the money.

 

·         A 1995 study by the National Research Council placed the following College of Engineering doctoral programs within the top 10 nationwide:

·         Chemical engineering—5

·         Civil engineering—5

·         Computer science—8

·         Electrical engineering—3

·         Materials science—5

·         Mechanical engineering—9

·         Physics—8

 

·         New Mobility magazine ranked Illinois first among "disability-friendly" colleges in 1998.

 

·         Science Watch (1998) ranked the U of I fifth in the nation for its scientific impact to agricultural science from a field of the top 100 federally funded U.S. universities.  Researchers in agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, and other engineering disciplines made critical contributions to the body of publications cited for this ranking.

 

·         U.S. News & World Report (2002-2003) ranked the U of I among the top public universities that grant doctoral degrees.  Overall, the College of Engineering undergraduate program ranked fourth, while the engineering graduate program ranked fifth. Several engineering specialties have been ranked among the top in recent assessments (1999-2003):
