A Message from the Dean

Welcome to the new 2002 Summary of Engineering Research.  The College of Engineering has printed this annual compilation of research since the early 1900s, but this year offers it as a searchable website and CD-ROM.  Within these electronic files, you will find program descriptions, project summaries, and publication lists that represent the research efforts of faculty during the calendar year 2000, as well as new faculty and their research interests and activities in 2001.  The breadth, scope, and variety of research activities are enormous—more than 1,600 projects are under way and nearly 3,000 publications are reported.  The sheer amount of information prompted us to switch to electronic media with search tools designed to help you explore the areas you are most interested in and find specific projects and faculty more easily and quickly.

The research program, a more than $160-million endeavor,  involves some 650 researchers and numerous graduate and undergraduate students working on projects directed by engineering faculty.  Over time, the knowledge generated from this research will be found

·        in classrooms where students are learning to be engineers and scientists;

·        in solutions to problems of industry, government, and ultimately, society;

·        in novel, new products and practices that improve the quality of life for citizens in Illinois and elsewhere;

·        and in the advancement of engineering and science research conducted around the world.

The faculty, research environment, and facilities here are among the best in the nation, and some are unique in the world. In the latest U.S. News and World Report series on best engineering schools, the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois ranked fourth overall in undergraduate programs and fifth overall in graduate programs compared with 50 other engineering schools.  Several of our engineering specialties were ranked in the top 10, many programs in the top 5, and a few earned the highest possible rank.

I invite you to explore the Summary of Engineering Research to find some of the reasons the College of Engineering is consistently among the top-ranked public research universities. Each department provides contact information so that you can follow up with questions concerning research.  Additional information about departments, as well as activities, organizations, and services, can be found on the College of Engineering website at http://www.engr.uiuc.edu.

The electronic Summary of Engineering Research will continue to evolve as we find better ways to deliver information to you.  Please send your suggestions for how the Summary of Engineering Research could be more serviceable to research@engr.uiuc.edu.
