The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering seeks to lead the profession and society through education, research, and service, with a goal of educating engineers who stand at the head of their fields, generating and applying new knowledge that strengthens the engineering profession and responds to societal needs, and sponsoring outreach programs that benefit the profession and the public.
While addressing the broad spectrum of areas long associated with mechanical and industrial engineering, such as dynamics and controls, energy transfer, manufacturing, operations research, and materials behavior, research in the department also explores such emerging areas as microscale phenomena and bioengineering. Innovative research directions reflect the interests and creativity of the faculty and students. Educating new generations of researchers is integral to the department's mission.
In addition to generating new knowledge, transferring it to practice is a driving force in the department's research. Several departmental center initiatives focus on research and technology transfer in the areas of building systems, energetic materials, continuous casting, fracture control, and manufacturing. The department also houses two National Science Foundation industry/university cooperative centers that focus on research in air conditioning and refrigeration and machine–tool systems. Two research programs designed to develop integrated mesoscopic cooler circuits and a mesoscopic thermo-mechanical water purifier are funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Through these and other research initiatives, the department continually expands its cooperative research efforts with state and federal government agencies as well as its partnerships with industry.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering demonstrates its commitment to meeting the needs of the State of Illinois and the nation through its program of both fundamental and applied research. The department is strongly committed to cross-disciplinary research as well and works closely with other departments within the College of Engineering and across the university. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Materials Research Laboratory, and other campus resources add strength and diversity to the department's research.
