Established in 1951, CSL is an internationally respected leader in information technology research, one of the most pervasive interdisciplinary research areas for the new millennium. Conversations about Internet companies and their stock offerings and e-commerce companies are more likely to include a mobile telephone or an e-mail link than a face-to-face discussion; both the content of these conversations and the technology that makes them possible highlight CSL's mission. CSL's faculty are engaged in research in each key area of information technology, including the devices and circuits that constitute information technology systems, the communications systems and wireless networks that serve as the backbone for information transfer, and the reliable computer systems that process and control digital information.
Support for research programs in CSL is broadly based, with significant investments from both Federal agencies and industry. Major research grants from the National Science Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are complemented by industrial research centers such as the Motorola Center for Communications. The research efforts of all CSL programs are greatly enhanced by significant investments in the form of research contracts, grants, and gifts of equipment from dozens of major corporations including Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Intel.
CSL research groups are located primarily in the Computer and Systems Research Laboratory, with additional facilities in the Engineering Sciences Building, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and Materials Research Laboratory, reflecting the broad interdisciplinary nature of CSL research. Approximately 70 CSL faculty members provide research opportunities for hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral associates, academic professionals, and visitors from all over the world.
Recognized both nationally and internationally by their peers, CSL faculty members hold numerous memberships in the national academies, fellowships in professional societies, and a distinguished list of research honors and awards; they are recognized by the U of I community with several endowed chairs and named professorships as well as academic awards for teaching excellence, scholarship, and service.
