An algorithm is being developed to merge geographic data of different spatial accuracy. The data must be in vector format, and the spatial accuracy of each data point must be known or can be estimated. The algorithm has the capability for automatic feature matching between two data files. It is intended for merging geographic data from different sources to form a project or site geographic information system (GIS), as well as for the updating of an existing GIS with new data collected at different accuracy levels. Eventually, the algorithms will be expanded to provide accuracy estimates for quantity data (such as surface area and earthwork volume) generated from a GIS.
