1999 Summary of Engineering Research

A Report of Activities During Calendar Year 1998

The Summary of Engineering Research is a compilation of all individual research projects ongoing in the University of Illinois College of Engineering. Organized by department, it contains brief departmental overviews, short descriptions of each project, and a list of recent faculty and student publications.
The activities of the faculty at universities such as ours are often divided into three seemingly independent categories labeled teaching, research, and professional service. The implication is that these are watertight compartments, and whatever time is spent in one of them is time deprived from the others. Even within academe, we perpetuate this notion. We refer to teaching loads, research seminars, and outside activities, for example. And then we wonder why the public fails to understand the totality of a professor's calling!
