University scholars should be individuals who show great promise and whose promise is clearly demonstrated by their scholarly productivity and excellence in teaching and outreach. Consideration should especially be given to nominating suitably qualified women and minority candidates. The funds accompanying the award can be used at the discretion of the recipient to further his or her scholarship, except that salary rate increases will not be permitted.
University Scholars on the UIUC campus are restricted to people holding the rank of Associate Professor at the time of the award and people holding the rank of full professor for no more than four years at the time of the award. Faculty with administrative appointments are eligible for nomination and will be judged, as are other nominees, entirely on the basis of teaching, research, and scholarship. Faculty are not eligible for an award more than once during their academic career.
Colleges are urged to re-nominate their strongest candidates. These awards are very competitive and preparation of the nomination material should be thorough. Failure to be chosen as an awardee the first year of nomination does not necessarily mean that the nominee is not highly qualified because the decisions are always extremely close.
