Fall 2000
Freshmen Profile

class

Two factors are critical for high school students hoping to be admitted to the University of Illinois College of Engineering: high school percentile rank (HSPR) and ACT scores. The college sets high standards and attracts top students each year. Statistically, the fall 2000 class looked like this:

Median ACT: 30 (all U of I = 27)

Median HSPR: 95

Illinois residents: 82%

Out of state: 16%

International: 2%

Projections for these students, based on past performance, are:

20% will go directly to graduate school.

50% will get advanced degrees later.

60% will accept employment in Illinois.

Employment demand is rising faster than the number of graduates to fill those jobs, but trends in employment indicate more job changes are likely for today’s graduates:

1950 grads had 1 or 2 career jobs.

1975 grads had 3 to 4 career jobs.

2000 grads will likely have 5 to 10 career jobs.
