Historically, exceptional University of Illinois engineering students with a GPA of B+ or higher do very well in these competitions. AAUW (American Association of University Women)

Profile
The American Association of University Women seeks to help women reach their personal and professional goals through a variety of fellowships and grants. Of special interest to engineering students:
  • Science and Technology Fellowships  are awarded to women in their final year of a Master's degree (including one-year programs) in architecture, computer/information science, engineering, and mathematics/statistics.
  • Engineering Dissertation Fellowships are offered for doctoral candidates who will have completed all coursework and passed all preliminary exams by the application deadline.  Fellows must devote full time to writing their dissertations and receive their degrees at the end of the fellowship year.  These fellowships cannot cover tuition for additional coursework.
Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents.

Chateaubriand

Profile
The Chateaubriand Fellowship Program in science and technology provides six months to one year's research in France at a university or laboratory. Stipends: $1,528 per month for a doctoral fellow and $1840 per month for a post doctoral fellow.

Requirements
Applicants must be US citizens and be registered in a university in the United States or in a U.S. national laboratory.

Computational Science and Engineering Fellows

Each year approximately eight to ten research awards are made to students enrolled in the CSE program. Research projects are selected for support on a competitive basis. Proposals are solicited each Spring for the academic year beginning the following Fall. The proposed research must be interdisciplinary and computationally oriented, and the proposal must be submitted jointly with two CSE faculty members from different disciplines. The CSE Fellows selected receive financial support equivalent to a half-time research assistantship in their home department plus a tuition waiver. CSE Fellows present their research results at the annual CSE Symposium .



Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)

Profile
The German Academic Exchange Service provides a variety of awards for study in Germany, including dissertation research.

Requirements
Eligibility requirements vary with the programs; applicants must be US citizens.

DAAD Annual Grants

Profile
The DAAD offers to the University of Illinois the possibility of two grants each year providing ten months of study in Germany to a highly-qualified students. Preference is given to doctoral students. The Graduate College holds a campus competition to select the students to be nominated to the DAAD, which awards at its discretion. Stipend: DM 1250 to DM 1700.

Requirements
U.S. citizens who are enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Chicago.

U.S. Department of DefenseNational Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships

Profile
The DOD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships Program can be used at any accredited U.S. university for graduate study. They are offered for study leading to the doctoral degree in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean and engineering sciences.

The NDSEG Fellowships are for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study.  Fellowships are awarded for up to three years. It can be renewed twice if the student is making satisfactory academic progress. Stipends increase from $16,500 the first year to $18,500 the last, and covers full tuition and fees. Approximately 90 awards are made each year. Minority students, women, and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply.  Ten percent of the awards are set aside for applicants from underrepresented minority groups.

Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals. Permanent residents are not eligible for this award. The NDSEG covers graduate study in the following fields:  aeronautical and astronautical engineering, biosciences, chemistry and chemical engineering, cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, geoscience,  industrial engineering, manufacturing, materials science and engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, ocean engineering, oceanography, and physics. Applicants may be graduating seniors or graduate students at or near the beginning of their graduate study.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Science to Achieve Results (STAR)
Fellowships for Graduate Environmental Study

Profile
The U.S. Environmental Proctection Agency (EPA), as a part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for Master's and Doctoral level students in environmentally-related  fields of study. Subject to availablity of funding, the Agency plans  to award approximately 100 new fellowships. Master's level students  may receive support for up to two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years. The fellowship provides up to $34,000 per year of support, depending on the number of months covered by the student's enrollment. This amount covers a $17,000 annual stipend, $5,000 for authorized expenses, and up to $12,000 for tuition and fees paid directly to the institution.
    
Requirements
Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. or its territories or possesions, or lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Resident aliens must include their green card number in the pre-application. This number will be verified with the Immingration and Naturalization Service. Students do not need to be enrolled in or formally accepted in a full-time graduate program at the time they apply, but proof of enrollment or acceptance must be produced prior to the award of the fellowship. Students must attend a fully accredited U.S. college or university. Students who have been enrolled for more than two years in the master's program or four years in the doctoral program are not eligible.

Acceptance of this fellowship does not necessarily preclude acceptance of other scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, or grant aid. However, this fellowship may not be awarded to anyone who will simultaneously be receiving other Federal assistance. The EPA invites pre-applications for graduate fellowships in academic disciplines relating to environmental management including physical, biological, and social sciences; mathematics and computer science; engineering; and environmental law. A pre-application provides the information needed for the merit review. Top-ranked applications from merit review will be required to sumit a brief formal application for assistance.

Deadline for receipt of pre-applications is November 14. Depending upon funding, annoucement of awards should be made by June 30 for the fall term.


Ford Foundation Predoctoral and Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities
Profile
The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the number of minorities who are underrepresented as faculty members in U.S. colleges and universities.  Fellowships are granted to those planning to pursue research or teaching careers. Predoctoral Fellowships provide $15,500 annually for three years of graduate study in the research-based doctoral programs leading to the Ph.D.; Dissertation Fellowships provide $24,000 and are intended for Ph.D. candidates who expect to complete the dissertation in one year.

Requirements
Applicants must be US citizens or nationals and of Alaskan Native, Native American Indian, Black or African American, Mexican or American Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders or Puerto Rican ethnicity. Applicants may be seniors or current graduate students. Applicants must submit scores from the General GRE Test, and should take the test no later than December of the year of application.

Fulbright Grants for Graduate Study Abroad

Profile
The USIA Fulbright Grants US Student Program is designed to provide opportunities for personal development and  international experience through one year's residence in virtually any country of the world. Projects funded include but are not limited to, university coursework, dissertation research, or classes in a music conservatory or art school. The program also offers opportunities to teach English in six countries: France, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Taiwan and Belgium/Luxembourg. Travel-only grants are available to France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Korea, Taiwan or Belgium/Luxembourg. Stipends vary with country.

Requirements
Open to U.S. citizens who will have a bachelor's degree before the beginning date of the grant. Grants may be used for post-doctoral study if the PhD has not been granted at the time of application. In most cases recipients will have a fluent command of the language of the host country. Grants are available to most countries for most disciplines. The Fulbright Scholarship Board seeks the best qualified students regardless of degree level.  Illinois engineering students do very well in these competitions. Applicants should have a high GPA, and those with independent study or research experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

GEM

Profile
The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering Science, Inc. (GEM) sponsors three programs to provide opportunities for ethnic minority students to pursue graduate education in the sciences and engineering.

  • GEM MS Engineering Fellowship Program assists minority students to obtain a master's degree in one the engineering fields. Depending on year of selection to the program (junior, senior or graduate) students must participate in a minimum of one to a maximum of three paid summer internships with the sponsoring corporation. Students must attend a GEM member university. The MS fellowship provides a $3,333 stipend per semester, and covers tuition and fees for three semesters.
  • GEM PhD Science Fellowship Program sponsors ethnic minority students pursuing PhD-level study in the sciences. Depending on selection year, students must participate in a least one paid summer internship with the sponsoring corporation. Students must attend a GEM member university. The PhD Fellowship provides a stipend of $15,000 per calendar year and all tuition and fees.
  • GEM PhD Engineering Fellowship Program sponsors ethnic minority students pursuing the PhD-level study in engineering. The student must have or be in the process of a master's degree in engineering. Depending on selection year, students must participate in a least one paid summer internship with the sponsoring corporation. Students must attend a GEM member university. The PhD Fellowship provides a stipend of $15,000 per calendar year and all tuition and fees.

Requirements
All of the GEM programs require U.S. citizenship at the time of application. Native Americans, Black/African-American, Mexican-American, and Puerto Rican ethnicities are eligible. Applicants to the MS Engineering Fellowship Program or the PhD Science Fellowship Program can be juniors, seniors, or have a BS degree. Applicants to the PhD Engineering Fellowship Program must have or currently be completing a master's degree in engineering.

Fannie and John Hertz Foundation

NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program

Profile
Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the field of science, mathematics, and engineering. Grants of up to $22,000 are awarded for one year and are renewable for a total of three years based on satisfactory academic advancement, research progress, and available funding. Approximately 400 students are supported by this program each year.

Requirements
Students may apply prior to receiving their bachelor's degree or at any time during their graduate career.  An applicant must be sponsored by a faculty advisor or his/her graduate department chair. Awardees may not simultaneously accept any other Federal fellowships or traineeships.  Educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs may not be received at the same time. Upon completion of the research required by the fellowship program there is no formal obligation for service to the Federal government.

Application and Deadline
Applicants must submit one original and five (5) copies of all materials by February 1 to the appropriate NASA facility from which consideration is being requested. Check the GSRP home page for the application and appropriate program for your research  http://education.nasa.gov/.

Applications will be reviewed and selections made in early May.


National Physical Science Consortium
Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women in the Physical Sciences

Profile
Provide six years of support, for doctoral study in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, materials and mathematical sciences, and physics. Stipends are $12,500 per year for the first four years and $15,000 per year for the last two, plus tuition and fees.

Requirements
Undergraduate seniors who are US citizens and African-American, Hispanic, Native-American-Indian, Eskimo, Aleut., Pacific Islander (Polynesian), and/or female are eligible to apply.

National Science Foundation (NSF)

Profile
NSF Graduate Fellowships provide support for research-based graduate study leading to doctoral degrees in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, and in the history or philosophy of science. The National Science Foundation awards approximately 900 fellowships annually to exceptional students in science, engineering, and the social sciences. The fellowships provide a stipend of $18,000 per year and include a tuition allowance at any graduate school, U.S. or abroad. Fellowships are available for up to three years.

Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents at the time of application. Applicants should have an excellent academic record and have demonstrated ability to do research or other creative work related to their field of study. Usually more awards are given in the physical sciences than other categories. Applicants may be graduating seniors or graduate students in the first year of study. Those eligible to apply for the NSF Minority Fellowships or Women in Engineering and Computer Science Awards may hold a master's degree at the time of application, but must not have exceeded 30 semester hours of graduate study.

Students must submit GRE scores. All applicants must take the General Test and the Subject test in science or engineering closest to their area of study. The latest test date acceptable for the NSF is the December date and NSF will pay for students taking the paper and pencil GRE on the December test date. NOTE:  If  NSF pays for your Subject Test, you can not use the score for submission to graduate schools for admission.

UIUC NOTE: If you are a B+ student or better and have some research experience, you should apply for a NSF Fellowship.  Students who apply as seniors should also remember to reapply as graduate students.

Printed NSF applications are available in the Engineering Graduate Office, 206 Engineering Hall and in the Graduate Fellowships Office, 201 Coble Hall. They can be printed from the internet or completed through the NSF FastLane at www.fastlane.nsf.gov/.

Deadline for application  submission is the first Monday in November.This is a receipt deadline not a postmark deadline.  The Undergraduate GPA Form, Transcripts and all Reference Letters are due on December 15. 


Rhodes Scholarship

Profile
Rhodes Scholars study for two and with special permission, three (3) years of study at Oxford University in Great Britian. Study can be in any field and must lead to a degree. The Rhodes pays for tuition, fees, travel to and from home to Oxford, and an allowance of 14,000 pounds (approximately $23,000). The United States is divided into eight districts. Each district may nominate up to four applicants to represent their states, totaling 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars per year. Applicants apply from the state in which they attend school or in which they have permanent residence.

Requirements
Open to U.S. citizens--over 18, and not over 24 by October 1 of the year of application. Applicants should leadership activities, physically active, and demonstrated their intellectual ability through coursework and related academic activities. Scholars must have received a bachelor's degree by the time they begin studies at Oxford.

Application and Deadline
UIUC seniors and first year graduate students should see Dr. Julia Goldberg, Coordinator of International Projects in 306 International Studies Building, 910 S. Fifth St., Champaign, at the end of the spring semester to discuss international awards. Deadlines for these awards are very early in the fall semester, so be sure to check out requirements early.

The Rhodes application requires five to eight letters of recommendation, a transcript and a 1000-word essay. The essay is an extremely important part of the process.  


Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Fellowships

Profile
SRC Full Fellowships provide a living stipend of $1,550 per month and full tuition and fee support for up to three (3) years of doctoral study. 

SRC Master's Scholarships are open to African-American, Hispanic, or Native American U.S. or Canadian citizens who are pursuing or planning to pursue a master's degree in a discipline with research relevant to microelectronics under the guidance of an SRC-designated faculty member and under an SRC-funded contract. SRC Master's Scholarships provide $1,400 per month for up to two years of master's-level study and tuition and fee support. SRC will provide a grant of $2,000 to the scholar's department.

Requirements
Fellows in both classifications must be U.S. or Canadian citizens pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD with research relevant to microelectronics under the guidance of an SRC-designated faculty member. Both programs provide a grant of $2,000 to the Fellow's department. SRC Fellows who do not complete the PhD must repay one-half the fellowship.
